Western Jets History

We understand that there is more to a club the size of ours than just sticking bibs on seven girls week after week and throwing them onto a court. We understand and take seriously that our club is a community of nearly 1000 people and netball – and sport in general - is a great way to form the foundation for young people to learn skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Our motto - ‘Netball for Life’ – means a lot to us at the Jets. Firstly, we want to provide a community for people to be involved in whatever capacity suits them, whenever they want – playing, umpiring, coaching, administration etc. We also have a policy that we don’t displace any Jets player – once a Jet always a Jet. We will also do our absolute best to place any player that wants to play netball into a team. The most important thing for us is to see all players running around, having fun, getting fit and learning life-skills in a netball environment.

That is not to say that we are not competitive at the Jets. We have a proud history of strong, competitive and successful underage teams and one of our current goals is to provide a more defined pathway for high-achieving and aspirational netballers to play at the very top level. In 2010, we have recruited well-credentialed coaches to strengthen our senior grades with the aim of improving the perception that the Jets do not provide players with top level coaching at senior grades.

From humble beginnings in 1995 the Western Jets Netball Club  - originally known as Michaelangelo Netball Club - played at the Marleston Sports Complex. With an amazing amount of effort from a relatively few people, our club now is proud to field around 30 teams at ETSA Park in the premier South Australian winter and summer netball competitions.

From our fantastic Junior Jets program for 5-7 year olds, we cater for netball for all ages and all standards. We are also proud to field a team dedicated to girls and women with special needs.

Our clubs fees for members continue to be one of the lowest of any major club and we deeply thank the contribution of our sponsors to allow us to keep fees as low as possible. We believe at the Jets that a person’s financial situation should not stop them from being involved in sport and we continue to work hard to keep the fees low. The commitment of our sponsors allow us to provide all players with a free training polo shirt (with their name on the back) and in 2010 the club will be providing a game-day jacket at no cost.

As a relatively new club to SA netball, we don’t have the burden of the immense history of rival clubs, but instead we have a great energy and enthusiasm for our Jets community and the benefits that sport has on young people.

We are proud of what the Jets have achieved in our short history and are excited about the upcoming winter season and beyond.
